From Your Board of Directors
|
|
Dear Members & Friends of CCMCC,
We
had an exciting weekend at Christ Covenant with Reverend Elder Lillie
Brock! Everyone who attended her Change
Cycle workshop found a new understanding of where we are as a church in the
stages of change and what to expect as we move forward. If you missed it, the book is available
through the website www.changecycle.com. Also
many thanks to Beth Anderson and the hospitality team for a wonderful
lunch.
Our
Office Manager, Angela Womack, is now full-time. Her office hours are Monday through Friday
from 7:30am-4pm. We feel that it is
important to have someone available at the church on a regular basis to ensure
that the needs of the congregation are met.
Angela is an asset to the church, so please contact her with any
questions or needs that you may have.
Finally, we would like to thank everyone who braved the storms last
night to attend the "What's Next?" forum.
We continued our discussions from the previous forum and reviewed where
we are at present with regards to finances, retreat, pastoral search, and
outreach. We talked a little about
outreach plans for the holidays, and Ruth Gabriel will lead a committee for
outreach within our church community. If
you have any suggestions or ideas, please contact us at bod@christcovenantmcc.org.
Thank you all for the gifts you bring to this community. We will continue to make progress and further
the mission of this Church by working together.
Peace and Love, CCMCC Board of Directors

September 27- Marsha Stevens - Pino - Maybe you know Marsha Stevens because she wrote a song you love or because she came to your church to do a concert. Maybe you know her because she has written theme songs for every MCC General Conference since 1985 or because someone you know has been on a recording with her. Marsha wrote "For Those Tears I Died" when she was only 16 years old. One of the most popular songs of the Jesus movement it is a moving testimony to God's saving grace, replete with images of baptism and liberation. Marsha will be performing in concert on Saturday evening, September 26 at 7 pm and will then lead us in worship on Sunday. Please make plans to join us! You will be glad you did!

Spaghetti Dinner & Silent Auction
|
|
| this Saturday night, September 19th
This is a FREE night for everyone, but we will be having a silent auction if you would like to participate. We will be inviting our neighbors who live around the church and their families and the events will start at 5:30 pm. We hope to have the bounce house like we did at Easter. We will start eating around 6:00 pm and the auction will end around 7:30 pm. There are a few items that will be up for live auction. The event will end around 8:00 pm.
The hospitality team will provide the spaghetti, bread and drinks. Everyone makes their spaghetti sauce differently and if you do cook then please make your special sauce and bring it to share with your friends. If you do not cook, that is ok, come anyway, there will be plenty to go 'round!
**PLEASE BRING YOUR SAUCE IN A CROCK POT. We will be using the stove for the spaghetti and won't have enough space to heat everyone's sauce.
Dana and Michelle Clark will provide "mini" guitar and drum lessons. I have been taking guitar lessons for a month and it is lots of fun. Dana is a wonderful teacher!
If you have a business or know someone who would contribute to our silent auction please have them call me @ 678-367-7662 or email me at:hospitality@christcovenantmcc.org
Please invite your friends and join us for a fun evening !!!!!!
Thanks!

Marsha Stevens-Pino in concert
|
|
Saturday night, September 26, 7pm
Marsha Stevens-Pino will be here to rock the house! Save the time and date! You won't want to miss out on this awesome experience!
Born Marsha Carter, the talented performer wrote what would
become Children of the Day's classic hit, "For Those Tears I Died (Come to the Water)" when she was just sixteen. One of the most popular songs of the Jesus movement, "For Those Tears I Died" is a moving testimony to God's saving grace, replete with images of baptism and liberation...the song was featured on what was destined to become the most important Christian music album of all time,
Maranatha's The Everlastin' Living Jesus Music Concert, the record that put the Jesus movement revival into high gear, spreading its influence from Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa throughout the country and beyond. "For Those Tears I Died" became one of the best known Christian folk songs of the decade. It would be translated into numerous languages, recorded by countless artists and, for a time, could be found in practically every evangelical songbook in the country. No one in 1969 could have predicted it would have such influence in the decade ahead - much less that, for two decades
beyond, Christian congregations would be ripping the song out of their hymnals,
systematically binding up the pages and mailing them off to Stevens as a symbol of the hostility they felt toward one who continued to love Jesus and sing His praises when they thought she was no longer entitled to do so...
Stevens became the first (and as of 2002, the only) major singer in the contemporary Christian music subculture to identify herself publicly as a lesbian...Christian Century Magazine has said that Stevens became "conservative Christianity's worst nightmare - a Jesus-loving, Bible-believing, God-fearing lesbian Christian."
Somewhat ironically, Stevens has continued to represent "the spirit of the Jesus
movement" more faithfully than anyone else from that era. In the early '70s, Christian bands often traveled the country in vans or buses, playing wherever and whenever they could in exchange for a free-will offering and a chance to give their testimonies.
Likewise, Stevens spent the (past 10 years) in an RV doing from 120-200 concerts a year...she eschews worldly possessions, fame, fortune and all the rest for the simple opportunity of telling the old, old story of Jesus and His love.

One Spirit, One Body
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all
baptized into one body- Jews or Greeks, slaves or free- and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. -1 Corinthians 12:12-13
CCMCC Retreat
By Ruth Gabriel, Retreat Team Member
Last year in November I went to the Christ Covenant retreat for the first time.
Although I had attended the church since May of 2009, I really didn't feel I knew very many people or that they knew me. But, at the retreat I got to know more people, took part in centering prayer and became friends at a deeper level with those who attended. Especially moving for me was the labyrinth experience. I saw it as many people in many ways seeking the divine and yet together. I had never cried tears of gratitude
before. That night I did.
I highly recommend the retreat as a way to come together to laugh, perhaps to cry, and experience the spiritual together. I had a retreat sponsor who checked up on me and gave me support. That will be available for newcomers again this year. The retreat team is working toward this year's experience being the best ever! I hope to see you there! -Ruth Gabriel
We will not have open registration the day of the retreat at Camp Mikell as we have in previous years. No fees or registration for the retreat will be accepted after November 10, 2009.
Retreat planning meetings:
Sept 23, Oct 7, Oct 21, Nov 4, Nov 18

Please say a big thank you to your retreat team members when you see them!
Rev. Jane Acuff

Sheri Smith
The retreat team is meeting every other week to plan and prepare for a restful and
rewarding time together at Camp Mikell. Our journey begins with dinner on Friday evening followed by introductions and a small group activity. During the weekend we will think about the Body metaphor that the apostle Paul is speaking of in his letter to the church at Corinth. You may want to begin this journey before November 20th by reading the 12th chapter of 1 Corinthians and thinking about different body images. There will be some art, some meditation and prayer, some singing, a lot of fun and
re-creation. We will cap off our time together with worship on Sunday morning.
Marshall-Grant Ministries and Satin Britches will be with us all weekend to
provide music. Thanks to everyone who is able and willing to take the time to get
together. We form bonds on these retreats that are not possible with brief Sunday
encounters.
