Dear Christ Covenant Friends,
As you know, February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the massive and varied contributions of African-American people. Black History Month also affords us an opportunity to refect on the values and attributes that have shaped a people and a world-changing movement for equality. Because many leaders and core values of these freedom movements have been rooted in the church and in theologies of a Liberating God, this celebration offers the church a time to reflect, not only on questions of our own racism and exclusive attitudes, but on the role of the church in the Project of Liberation.
Every year during February, I re-read my favorite publication of Dr King's, his Letter from a Birmingham Jail. I've done this for over fifteen years now and I see something different with each reading, something that convicts and challenges me to renew my commitment to the work of liberation. For Dr. King and so many leaders in movements for liberation all around the world, the fervor that fuels their work is their absolute conviction that freedom is God's desire for us all! God is in it - the Great Liberator!
And, in interesting counterpoint, we remember that Dr King's letter from his cell in Birmingham was prompted by correspondence from clergy colleagues in Atlanta who urged Dr King to wait, not to press his struggle for freedom. In response, King calls the church to account! His words are, I believe, words for today and for us as well, as we strive to be an inclusive, diverse congregation who cares about issues of justice and inclusion. I hope that this quotation from his letter will inspire us to the passionate work of liberation. Dr. King wrote this to his colleagues:
There was a time when the church was very powerful in the time when the early Christians rejoiced at being deemed worthy to suffer for what they believed. In those days the church was not merely a thermometer that recorded the ideas and principles of popular opinion; it was a thermostat that transformed the mores of society. Whenever the early Christians entered a town, the people in power became disturbed and immediately sought to convict the Christians for being "disturbers of the peace" and "outside agitators"' But the Christians pressed on... Things are different now. So often the contemporary church is a weak, ineffectual voice with an uncertain sound. So often it is an archdefender of the status quo. Far from being disturbed by the presence of the church, the power structure of the average community is consoled by the church's silent and often even vocal sanction of things as they are. Perhaps I have once again been too optimistic. Is organized religion too inextricably bound to the status quo to save our nation and the world? ... I am thankful to God that some noble souls from the ranks of organized religion have broken loose from the paralyzing chains of conformity and [have become] active partners in the struggle for freedom. Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from Birmingham Jail, April 1963. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday as we finish our epiphany series, Who Are We?, and next week as we begin Lent together with our Ash Wednesday service - Wednesday, February 17 at 7PM here at the church.
With Love,
Rev Elder Glenna Shepherd Pastor |
| The Board Corner |
|
Each week in her sermons, Rev. Shepherd has asked us "Who are we?". In keeping with that theme, the Board has started conversation about who we are as a congregation, who we want to be, and how we can live every day as the people of Micah 6:8- "Do Justice...Love Kindness...Walk humbly with our God". As we move forward, we ask that you take the opportunity to explore the answers to these questions and help us lead our Church into the future that we all envision. We have formed a financial strategy group to develop plans for reaching the financial goals of our church. We held our first meeting earlier this week and got off to a great start in this process. Next week, the Board is holding a work session to review and update our SOP's to accurately reflect how the work of the church gets accomplished. Please pray with and for your Board. We are committed to bringing you excellence in this work that each of us has been called to do. In closing, we would like to re-issue our challenge: Invite someone new to Church each week. It's time to let your friends know about what we have to offer!
Peace and Blessings,
Board of Directors |
