February 25, 2010
Jesus also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: 'Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing alone, was praying thus, "God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers or even like this
tax -collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income."
But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, "God, be merciful to me, a sinner!"
I tell you, this one went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.' -Luke 18:9-14 |
| From Your Pastor... Self-Examination |
|
|
Dear Christ Covenant Friends,
Lent is more than not eating chocolate. In fact, it's probably - at least for most of us - not about giving up something quite so obvious. But I think that observing Lent has some life changing positive purposes for us. The primary one is that, in following Jesus' retreat to the wilderness, we can spend intentional time in self-examination. Not a walk in the park, but full of the possibility of renewal and new hope.
In our age of "I'm ok; you're ok" thinking, especially as those who've been told that we're wrong or bad or unacceptable; helpful, realistic self criticism is a difficult place to find and some of us have natural tendencies to be particularly hard on ourselves, punishing ourselves for our failings or even our perceived failings.
Think of Lent as getting an aerial view of your life: seeing how it all works together. Look at your work and home, your faith and friendships, how you spend your time and your money. Take a chance on asking yourself the hard questions like, What brings me joy? and How am I making the world a better place?. Take this opportunity to examine the demons in your life: the bad habits, destructive patterns, annoying traits, addictions, and just things that you wish were different.
We don't do this to make ourselves feel worse - even if we might in the short-run. We do this self-inventory so that we can gain clarity about who we are and what we need.
The tax collector in our scripture is pretty clear about what he needs. He's feeling pretty bad about his behaviors toward the poor. (Tax collectors were ruthless predators, extracting money from those without much political clout.) But it seems that he wants a turn-around. He doesn't want to be sick anymore. And so he asks God for what he needs: healing, help, cleansing.
On the other hand, the Pharisee hasn't done his personal work. He's in spiritual denial, I would say. Is he perfect? Well, we could say that he's at least judgemental and self-aggrandizing. And I am sure there is more.
The choices offered by this story seem to be: to live an unexamined life, finding fault outside ourselves; or to examine ourselves, being fearlessly honest, ask for help to move out of the places of mess that we find, and move into the Easter moment - new life.
Self-examination is the beginning of the road to resurrection. May your journey be blessed.
With Love and Blessing,
Rev Elder Glenna Shepherd Pastor |

The Installation Service for The Reverend Elder Glenna T. Shepherd is next Sunday, March 7th. It will be a day to celebrate the bright future in store for us at CCMCC.! As Church leaders, we have all committed to going through our email contacts and Facebook Friends and inviting people to attend the service. We are certain that if they attend once, they will be "hooked" and will continue to worship with us. We challenge you, members and friends of Christ Covenant, to follow our lead. Go through your email contacts, Facebook friends, and any other lists that you might have. Invite your friends, acquaintances, coworkers, and family to share in our celebration on March 7th. Ask those you know who have not been to church in a while and friends who have never attended worship here but "just might come". This is something that you can do to help your church that does not cost you any money, only a little bit of your time. Help us get the word out about what Christ Covenant MCC has to offer. It will be good for the Church as we work to rebuild and excellent for the people who attend worship with us. Blessings,

| Spiritual Direction |
|
What is Spiritual Direction? There are probably as many ways to define spiritual direction as there are spiritual directors. For me, it's a process of helping people strengthen, deepen and enlarge their relationship with God. Unlike therapy where the healing relationship is between the therapist and the client, in spiritual direction, the main relationship is between the client and God. My job as director or companion is to help with that relationship. Who is God for you? How has your religious training up to now limited that answer for you? Can you trust this God, really trust? How have past religious experiences shaped your answer? Just as our relationships with a person are different from everyone else's relationship with that person, so it is with our relationship with God. Opening up these questions of who God is and what your relationship with God entails can be very scary and confusing. My role is to keep you steady and safe as you allow more exploration and experimentation and seek more fullness in your relationship with God.
For an appointment, please email me at sallybpurvis@mac.com.
*My fees are based upon ability to pay. Peace and Blessings, Rev. Dr. Sally Purvis |
